Child employment laws (Victoria) - changing for the better

What's new?

From 1 July 2023 every Victorian business will need to have a licence to employ children under 15 years old.

The new system replaces the permit system that was put into place on 1 July last year.

What is the benefit?

The permit system works on a permit per employee basis, meaning the business needed a permit for each child under 15.

The licence system is a one off licence for the business which covers the employment of any child under the age of 15.

Do you need a licence if you already have a permit?

You do not need a licence for employee's under 15 who you already have a permit for, these will continue to be valid post 1 July 2023. But, you will need a licence to cover any new employees under 15 from 1 July 2023.

Exemptions

Parents or guardians do not need to have a licence to employ their child/ren in their family business.
